Watertown City Council is pleased to share the City of Watertown will receive more than $3 million in federal funds as part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act, which was signed into law last week.
Included in the funding is $3.1 million to enhance local transportation and $541,000, which will benefit the Community Development Block Grant Program. The CDBG program is a federal initiative that helps strengthen communities by improving housing, expanding economic opportunities and supporting low-and moderate-income individuals and families.
In recent years, CDBG funds have benefited the Watertown City School District Backpack Program, provided homeless assistance, enhanced handicapped accessibility, improved rental and owner-occupied housing and more.
“These are very uncertain times not only for people across the globe, but also for local governments who will face significant financial challenges in the wake of this pandemic,” said Mayor Smith.
“As a Council, we would like to thank our federal representatives—including Senator Schumer, Senator Gillibrand and Congresswoman Stefanik—for advocating for our City and delivering these much-needed funds. We look forward to utilizing them in a way that does the most good for the people of the City of Watertown.”
